 Creating an Art Quilt Map

 

 

Two master teachers, an extraordinary journey, a work of art with deep meaning.

We have all experienced loss of some kind -- death, the end of relationship, a child leaving home, betrayal, our own aging, or the loss of "what could have been." It is an integral part of the shared human condition, and yet a very personal one as well.

This inspirational workshop will combine language and art to help you find your way through loss… with a soft map…and will be limited to 25 participants.


The day will not be all about loss… but also about life, great love, and humor, and community. 

And beauty.

 

This one-day art and writing experience is a journey into that loss, on a deeply personal level.

We'll combine writing, cloth and paper to create a personal art quilt about loss in your life--whatever that means to you at this moment in time. You'll write to prompts provided by Patti Digh and then with artist Jane LaFazio's guidance, creating 6 or so small, layered, stitched squares of cloth and paper as we work our way through the day together.

You'll leave with a small finished art quilt and a deeper understanding of your new map through grief and loss.  

 

Our Process

Participants will work on small squares of felt (~3x3”) and compile a stack of them.  Each will be different and will be in response to Patti’s prompts and Jane’s instructions.  Near the end of class, participants will arrange their squares on a larger piece of felt, to create a neighborhood type map.

Who We Are 

 
 
Jane LaFazio has been a full-time artist since 1998. She truly believes she is living the life she was meant to live! In that time, she has cultivated a wide range of skills as a painter, mixed media, quilt artist and art teacher. She’s known for her fun-loving, creative teaching style, and providing a relaxed supportive environment in the classroom. She teaches workshops online and at art retreats internationally. Jane’s artwork has been featured in Cloth, Paper, Scissors and Quilting Arts magazines many times, in Danny Gregory’s An Illustrated Life, and in numerous books.  Her instructional DVDs “From Art Journaling to Art” and “The Small Art Quilt” are available on Amazon. Materials List For Each Participant To Bring:
(In very SMALL quantities of each item)
 
  • Bits of old cloth & fabric (from old clothing or linens)
  • Beads, buttons, rocks, etc.
  • 1 sewing (embroidery) needle
  • Embroidery threads
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • A piece of fabric to share with the group of 25 ~ think about what represents strength to you, in the form of fabric, and bring a piece of that large enough to share small pieces of it with the others in the group
  • Fabric glue (optional)
  • Additional materials and handouts will be provided to each student
 
 
Location
 
 
The San Diego Watercolor Society (SDWS) is a gallery, an education center for workshops and classes, a reference and instructional resource for watermedia artists. It’s light-filled education center will be the location for our workshop. SDWS is located in  Liberty Station, in the Pt. Loma neighborhood of San Diego.
